GEOSPATIAL ENERGY MAP: INDIA | UPSC EXAM

INTRODUCTION

  • On October 18, 2021, NITI Aayog unveiled a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based Energy Map of India.
  • NITI Aayog produced the Geospatial Energy Map in partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and with the support of the central government’s energy ministries.

MAIN OBJECTIVE –

  • The map’s major goal would be to identify and locate all primary and secondary energy sources, as well as associated transportation and transmission networks, to present a complete picture of distribution and energy production in a country.
  • The map will bring together energy data from several organisations and present it in a more visually appealing and graphical format.
  • The Geospatial Energy Map, according to NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar, might be an excellent study tool.

HOW TO ACCESS THE GIS MAPS

  • This website, vedas.sac.gov.in/energymap/, provides access to India’s Geospatial Energy Maps.
  • To make the Geospatial Energy Map of India dynamic and user-friendly, the latest breakthroughs in web-GIS technology and open-source software will be used.
  • It will help with policy creation, planning, and investment direction for financial institutions, as well as catastrophe management using available energy assets.
