INTRODUCTION
- On September 3, 2021, India became the first Asian country to launch the India plastics pact.
- At Confederation of India (CII)’s 16th Sustainability Summit, this pact was launched.
- The Pact is a joint initiative between the CII and World-Wide Fund for Nature – India (WWF India).
- By the British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis, this pact was launched.
- The India Plastics Pact aims to build a circular system for plastics by bringing together leading businesses at a national level.
AIMS OF INDIA PLASTICS PACT –
- The Pact aims to reuse, reduce, and recycle plastics in the entire value chain of the plastics sector.
- The pact also aims to stimulate innovative business models to reduce the total amount of plastic packaging.
- It also aims to the identification of blockages at incorporating recycling content in packaging, design reusable packaging, and remove/eliminate unnecessary plastics packaging.
TARGETS OF PLASTICS PACT –
- All the targets of the pact should be completed by 2030. The pact comprises four stages that aim to innovate, reduce and then reimagine the plastic packaging.
- Ensure 100 percent of plastic packaging is reusable or recyclable.
- Ensure 50 percent of plastic packaging is effectively recycled.
- Ensure 25 percent content recycled content across all plastic packaging.
- Create a list of unnecessary or problematic plastic packaging and take actions to address them through re-design and innovation.
