RETIREMENT OF INTERNET EXPLORER IN JUNE 2022 | UPSC EXAM

INTRODUCTION

  • On May 19, 2021, Microsoft announced that the Internet Explorer 11, a desktop browser will be discontinued on June 15, 2022 for several versions of Windows 10 and its future will be on Microsoft Edge.
  • The company also mentioned that the websites and apps based on Internet Explorer old will keep working in the new Microsoft Edge mode till 2029.
  • Microsoft says that applications from Windows 10 Desktop LTSC, Server Internet Explorer 11 and MSHTML (Trident) will not get affected by the IE removal.
  • The air traffic control systems as well as MRI devices can continue to use Windows 10 LSTC although, Microsoft 365 will end support for Internet Explorer 11 in August 2021.

 

REASONS OF RETIRING INTERNET EXPLORER – 

  • Microsoft mentioned in its official blog, that the company is in the process of migrating to Microsoft Edge, the new Internet Explorer to provide users with a safer, faster and more modern browsing experience.
  • The company also stated that Microsoft Edge will resolve a major compatibility issue of legacy Internet Explorer websites and apps.

 

KEY POINTS OF MICROSOFT EDGE WITH INTERNET EXPLORER– 

  • Microsoft Edge, based on the Chromium project, is the only browser offering dual engine support for traditional as well as modern Internet Explorer-based web pages along with supporting ActiveX controls.
  • The Microsoft Edge offers few advantages over the Internet Explorer like:
  • The streamlined productivity allows users to take advantage of modern features such as browser tab management.
  • Also, better browser security on Edge provides ultimate protection against malware or other attacks. In addition, it can issue security patches in response to security vulnerabilities within a few days or even hours, in comparison to IE 11, the monthly security update.
